Alternative Investing: Private equity can give robust returns

Most readers of this column will have a significant portion of their financial assets invested in the shares of publicly traded companies. Investing in "blue chip" equities is commonly believed to be a source of long-term, tax-efficient capital appreciation, with annual cash dividends to investors. In recent years, however, "buy and hold" has been replaced with "buy and hope" for many investors, who have seen their capital shrink while having to endure extreme market volatility.
